The Fox River Trail North of East Dundee
The Fox River Trail Crossing the Fox River
The Fox River Trail (Illinois - 35m) goes from Oswego (south) to Algonquin(north) and then connects with the McHenry County Prairie Trail to continue north all the way to the Wisconsin border. The trail descriptions and bike trail photos here include the northern part of the Fox River Trail from East Dundee Illinois north to Algonquin Illinois.
This is one of my favorite trails of all of the trails that I've taken in northern Illinois... When you continue on with the McHenry County Prairie Trail, you can go all the way to Genoa City Wisconsin (north) if you like!
The northern section of Fox River trail is really beautiful (and fairly shady). It is pretty much along the river and very wooded. There is a moderate amout of traffic in the summer, on weekends and on really nice days but it is not too bad and the trail is still probably one of the nicest bike trails in northern Illinois (imho).
I usually continue on with the McHenry County Prairie Trail (north) when I am on the northern end of the Fox River trail and you can follow the links on these pages to the descriptions and photos of the Prairie Trail also.
The Fox River Trail North pages (north of Dundee) were my original pages and photos of the Fox River Trail. I've been on the southern section (south of Dundee in this case) a few more times now, but I only just got the photos and pages uploaded for the southern section (to Geneva).
See the Fox River Trail South pages for photos and first hand descriptions of the southern section of the FRT (from Geneva to Dundee).
I hope you enjoy this little virtual tour and hope it inspires you to take the trail(s) in the spring, summer or fall and/or provides a nice memory of your trips in the winter when you may not be able to get out there and enjoy it (although some people do ride throughout some of the winter also and those fat mountian bike tires can handle the snow pretty well too! :-) ).
Here's a photo tour of the Fox River Trail, from south to north. These pictures are from mid July (2003) so it's a little harder to see the shady areas...
